Dog sleeps safe from rain

nestled in blankets, my feet

warm up, beneath her.

Impatience

All the time now the cat mewls his distress.

He wants to go out. The snow’s a mess.

It’s March, and it’s been March for months.

Snow and sleet on the roof, which starts to leak.

This gray makes life seems bleaker than it is.

I wake all warm. The arm of my lover

outstretched in bliss. Birds flock the feeder.

The cat goes wild. Underneath it all,

the earth rumbles and sighs. Three deep

purple iris on the table, inside:

a hologram reflected in snow. Late spring

and they’ll bow beneath our window from

their warmed up beds. Instead of grief,

I dream the sun, the lover in the garden

of love. The cat set free. And me. And me.
